"When can my child progress to a higher level?"

Class Progression @ DDSTeachers at Dancer's Dream Studio reserve the right to place students in the appropriate level based on technical ability and maturity of the dancers. Placement of dancers in their respective classes is not limited by age.Students are evaluated every term and teachers will decide on the progression of the dancers in their class. At Dancer's Dream Studio, we progress the entire class together unless there are exceptions of being selected to the Advanced Classes. For eg, Bronze class students have been students of Ms Lorencia's since Twinkle Tots and it took them a consistent 3-4 years to move up to Bronze Class level as a whole.Your child may be placed in a class with an average age that is lower than his/her age group for at least 3-4 terms until he/she has built sufficient foundation to progress.Latin dance consists of 5 different dances; Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive and Paso Doble. There are different levels and techniques at different stages of their learning curve.Your trust in the teacher's professional judgement is greatly appreciated.

Providing Healthy Support and Guidance for your Children. The pursuit of a dance journey is extremely rewarding for children as it provides plentiful opportunities to hone their confidence and resilience. However, this journey does not come without its challenge for both the child and their parents. It is important to note that any form of assessments or having to showcase one's skills in unfamiliar circumstances can be daunting, be it for the first or hundredth time.Challenges that new dancers might experience include:
🙁 Not knowing what to expect for the first time.
🙁 Anxiety before their first attempt in performances, competitions or exams aka. stage fright.
🙁 Lack in preparedness, forgetting or not realising that they have to bring certain items.
🙁 Unrealistic expectations on the results.
Challenges that seasoned dancers might experience include:
🙁 Stage fright in performances, competitions and exams aka. stage fright.
🙁 Lack in preparedness, forgetting that they have to bring certain items.
🙁 Unrealistic expectations on the results.
🙁 Difficulties processing and differenciating "healthy" vs "unhealthy" competition amongst peers or familiar faces on the competition floor.
If you fail to prepare, you will prepare to fail.In Dancer's Dream Studio, we are grateful to have a strong community of dancers with parents who are supportive of our approaches and methodologies. We work closely with parents to ensure that their children can showcase their fullest potential. Some of the fundamental guiding points and questions are as such:1. Preparation
✅ Ensuring that logistics are ticked off in advance (e.g. costumes, shoes, hair and make up).
✅ Preparedness in terms of schedule.
2. Managing Expectations
✅ How much preparation and commitment will have to be dedicated for a particular exam or competition?
✅ What are your goals in this particular competition?
✅ What are the things to improve on?
✅ What are you most anxious about?
✅ Does it matter if you win or lose?
✅ What are some of the factors that might affect your performance on that day?
3. Working Closely with the Team
✅ Trusting your teachers/coaches
✅ Guide in self-practice at home
✅ Sending the self practice videos to the DDS Whatsapp line for teachers to review and feedback
✅ Participating in cross training organised by the studio or externally
✅ Watching Youtube videos for understanding.

Competition GuidelinesFor children who have found their talent and passion in dance and would like to embark on competitions, Dancer’s Dream Studio ensures that your child gets the most out of performances and competitions:✅ Experience and exposure
✅ Develop good values (being responsible, more confident, etc.)
✅ Teamwork development
✅ Encourage your child to raise his/her standards
✅ Learn to accept and apply feedback
✅ Expand social network
✅ Healthy, safe and professional environment for your child to shine
These are just a few of the advantages that your child may reap.Always keep in mind that while it may feel great for your child to win in competitions, winning isn't as important as giving it their all!One question we often receive is how to help kids handle the pressure involved with competitions and performances.

What do I have to take note/do if my child is keen to join competitions? Please note that if your child is keen to join competitions for the first time, it is compulsory to join a Competition Coaching Class (CCC) on top of their regular term classes. Joining the class does not guarantee that your child will be 100% ready for competitions or make placings at competitions that they decide to partake in. CCC serves as a form of additional training on top of your child’s weekly classes to better prepare them for competitions and to ease the pressures that they may face in the process. Seasoned competitors are exempted from CCC but there are many competitors who attend CCC for additional training to upkeep their standards.Competition Coaching Class (CCC)
• $360 for 6 x 1.5 hours
• Commit to 6-weeks class, 1.5 hour class per lesson.
• Classes will cover all 4 genres (Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive) or up to 3 dances for newer CCC classes.
• Ankle weights and resistance bands needed for CCC classes.
• Stamina training and physical conditioning.
• For new medallist competitors, dance routines will be given to you during CCC classes.
Important notes:
1. There will be strictly no arrangements for ala-carte classes or pro-rating of classes.
2. Make-up classes can be arranged in other available class slots. We will advise on the availabilities on the class slots after sign-ups have closed.
• Minimum of 4 pax to start class, maximum of 8 pax in a class.CCC classes are monthly recurring classes, though days and timings may differ slightly depending on sign ups.Exemptions are only given to students who have been consistently taking weekly private lessons for at least 8 months. We hope to seek parents' understanding as we have put this policy in place to better prepare students for competitions.

Competition GroomingSetting your child towards a positive experience in their first competition requires a collaborative effort from teachers and parents. Apart from exhibiting their best efforts on the competition floor, dancers have to "look the part" to feel confident.Whilst the teachers provide guidance during the classes to boost the children's readiness for competitions, parents have an essential part to play in ensuring that their children adhere to competition grooming standards; which includes the purchase of competition costumes from third parties, styling their hair and doing their make-up.The process of getting your child ready in terms of their appearance can be a stressful affair, especially during your first time as a competition parent. There are a series of hiccups that might occur in the process:😱 Costumes purchased did not come as per measurements/not a good fit and hence will need to repurchase.
😱 Costumes bought in wrong material.
😱 Child's dance shoes broke/no longer a good fit, needs a new pair but studio is out of stock.
😱 Wrong socks purchased.
😱 Difficulties in styling my child's hair according to grooming standards.
😱 Child is sensitive to the make-up products bought, need to get another set.
These are real situations that has occured amongst our parents' past experiences in many competitions, and it can be salvaged, but only if there is sufficient time to fix these situations. Therefore, the rule of thumb is to begin the process of looking for costumes right after registration of competitions, and practice hair styling and make-up at least once before the date of competition. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to recover from any circumstance so that your child gets to shine in confidence without a worry!More information on grooming requirements for competitions can be found here:

In Summary...Once your child expresses interest in participating in competitions, we will commit training your child to be competition ready through:
📌 Competition Coaching Classes (CCC)
📌 Teaching them the sequence of Latin Ballroom competitions, how to enter and exit the competition floor, competitor's etiquette and sportsmanship.
📌 Training them on important logistics to take note of (e.g. where to place their competitor's number tag, awareness to when their turn will be, where and when to report upon reaching the competition venue, what dances are they competing in) so that they take ownership of their participation in the competition.
📌 Navigating through the right principles of competing, guiding them to understand that the priority is to always celebrate their progress and to see their growth as the true success, rather than the physical medals and placements.
As a parent, your commitment in the following to aid your child's preparation will be:
✅ Ensuring that information, documents and payments required are duly read and submitted
✅ Purchase of competition costumes (e.g. through third party sites or Facebook groups for preloved competition wear - you can contact us for more information)
✅ Hair and makeup are in accordance to the competition grooming standards.
✅ Providing tons of encouragement to them from start to finish; it will be a struggle for some, but your support will go a long way!

Important Update: Private Dance Lesson Changes Starting July 2025We are always looking for ways to improve our students’ learning and progression. Starting July 2025, we will be making some updates to the structure of our private dance lessons, based on feedback from both students and parents.🕘 New Format: 45 minutes of private lesson + 45 minutes of self-practice in the studio (under supervision)
Total session will be 90 minutes long.
Please plan your time accordingly when you are booking classes.
💃🏻Practice Time After Class (Compulsory)
Students often mention they don’t have space or time to practise after class. So we’re including mandatory practice time right after the lesson to reinforce what’s been taught. This ensures faster progress and stronger muscle memory. For younger children, it will be recommended to do a minimum of 20 minutes self-practice after class.
As practice session is now somewhat semi-supervised, we will ensure that practice sessions are well-spent (no sitting down, no scrolling on the phone, no picnic sessions in studio). This change is also made because many parents shared that travelling down for just 45 minutes feels too short.🏠 Studio Usage Fee
A minimal studio fee ($10) will apply to cover the use of our studio floor space. This will be added to the service charges when you book private class via the app. This is for accountability and facility upkeep, as external studio rentals can cost $20/hour for shared space.
